Cool your Athlon (old school)

HardwareMy server runs on a rather old Athlon CPU. My experience has been, that it keeps pumping heat at 52°C even when it has no load. I remembered that in my old SuSE 9.1 days there was a tool called athcool, that would enable more powerfull cooling of the CPU.

My CPU:

vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 6
model : 8
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+
stepping : 0
cpu MHz : 1666.041
cache size : 256 KB

Now, just download the ascool tool and don't forget to install pciutils (apt-get install pciutils) and pciutils-devel. My experience: -10°C in the first few minutes. Just imagine how much power that is!

After a week: The system goes down to 40°C but, with moderate load from MythTV it goes up to 45°C.

Update 8. January 2008: I have rebuild athcool to run on openSUSE 10.2. You can download the RPM here.
