Packages worth upgrading from Factory openSUSE

For the record, the files of the Factory distribution can be found here.

OpenOffice

openSUSE 10.2 shipped with version 2.0.4 of OpenOffice.org. Since then, the great community around this project has released the version 2.1 of the package. Factory has this new files for you. Make sure you fetch those KDE and/or GNOME integration packages too.

Kernel

As you probably know the kernel (Linux for that matter) holds all the drivers (modules) needed for hardware to work well. The version of the kernel in openSUSE 10.2 was 2.6.18, which is a lot better than the ones before, but as of this month the most updated kernel is 2.6.20, which is avialable from Factory. This kernel works with openSUSE 10.2 but for AppArmor that complains on boot that some module does not load.

One nice thing about openSUSE is that the Factory branch of the distribution (the development one) is available on an up to date basis. As the "stable" distribution ages I like to update a few packages that do not need a full new install to make your life with Linux even nicer.
